The BJP-led MahaYuti alliance’s decisive win in Maharashtra is expected to drive infrastructure growth and address pending issues in the state. With both the Centre and state under aligned political leadership, experts predict faster progress on long-delayed projects, a report said on Monday.
Maharashtra has lagged behind other states in infrastructure and economic growth due to political instability in recent years. The new stable government is likely to focus on state-specific challenges and significantly increase spending on infrastructure.
One key factor behind the MahaYuti’s win was the success of the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme, which provides financial assistance to women. The scheme has benefited over 2.36 crore women, offering Rs 1,500 per month from July to November, amounting to Rs 7,500 per recipient. Plans to raise this aid to Rs 2,100 and later Rs 3,000 have further strengthened women’s trust in the government.
The report notes that while Maharashtra’s fiscal health in the first half of FY25 remains stable, the promised increase in financial aid will raise state expenditure. The annual cost of the scheme is projected to grow by 40%, from Rs 460 billion to Rs 644 billion, creating an additional burden of Rs 70-90 billion in the FY25 budget.
Despite these challenges, the victory is seen as a turning point. The success of such welfare schemes has not only shaped electoral outcomes but also influenced similar policies across India, with states likely to replicate them in upcoming elections.
