The 16th District Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, held for two days in Mudalagi town, ended with six resolutions aimed at preserving the Kannada language and culture. The resolutions were read by Prof. Chandrashekhar Akki, who presided over the event.
It was decided that Kannada numerals should be used in government functions and documents in Karnataka. The resolutions also called for doctors to write prescriptions in Kannada and for court judgments to be issued in the language. The use of Kannada in all government documents was emphasized.
Additionally, it was resolved that 5% of government jobs in Karnataka should be allocated to Kannadigas. Another proposal stated that 5% of the grants given to Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) should be reserved for Kannada-related programs.
Prof. Akki stated that Kannada, with its long history, is facing challenges. He stressed the need for the government to implement a law to make education in Kannada mandatory at least until the fourth standard. He added that concerns about legal implications should not deter such measures.
The Sarojini Mahishi Commission, which recommended preference for Kannadigas in government and private jobs in 1986, was also mentioned. It was noted that the recommendations have not been fully implemented.
The Sammelana concluded with discussions on protecting Kannada language, culture, and related resources, including land and water. Several officials and dignitaries participated in the event.
