US Consul General in Mumbai, Mike Hankey, on Friday emphasized the potential for diverse partnerships between the United States and India, particularly in the fields of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and green energy. Speaking during his visit to Goa, Hankey stressed the importance of creating resilient supply chains, especially for critical components like lithium-ion batteries, which are currently dependent on China.
Hankey noted that the US and India could collaborate on advanced electronics and green energy manufacturing, with both countries already working on cutting-edge solutions in these sectors. He highlighted the opportunity for mutual growth, with US and Indian companies exchanging technology and expertise, especially in clean energy transitions.
Reflecting on Goa’s strengths, Hankey mentioned that the state’s businesses and researchers could learn from global experiences while also offering valuable insights to the world. He pointed out that while electric vehicles rely on current lithium-ion technology, the supply chain’s vulnerability to a single source, like China, poses risks. He suggested that involving businesses and researchers together can lead to more resilient solutions.
Hankey also noted the role of US national laboratories and Indian counterparts in driving this collaboration. With India’s strong two-wheeler and three-wheeler industries, Hankey sees significant potential for partnerships in western India, emphasizing the diverse opportunities both nations can explore together.
