Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, highlighted India’s commitment to balancing industrial growth with environmental preservation. Singh co-chaired the summit alongside Sweden’s Minister for Climate and Environment, Romina Pourmokhtari at the LeadIT Summit during COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan on Thursday. The summit focused on advancing the net-zero transition and decarbonizing industries through green technologies.
Singh emphasized that India aims to meet its climate targets under the Paris Agreement by ensuring sustainable industrial development. He underscored the importance of public-private partnerships and international cooperation in achieving a low-carbon transition in hard-to-abate industries like steel and cement.
Reflecting on the progress of the India-Sweden Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), Singh noted the successful collaboration between countries and industries in co-developing technologies and sharing knowledge to drive industrial transformation. He also highlighted the partnership’s role in helping countries align their industrial activities with climate goals.
The summit called on industries to play an active role in climate action, with Selvin Hart, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General, urging companies to advocate for the necessary changes. Singh concluded by stressing that a low-carbon transition not only contributes to climate goals but also creates economic opportunities, jobs, and resilient communities. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to international cooperation in driving the global transition to a sustainable industrial future.
