Lucy Hamilton, an 18-year-old fast bowler, has become the youngest player to take a five-wicket haul in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Playing for Brisbane Heat, Lucy delivered a sensational spell of 5-8 against the Melbourne Stars on Sunday, making her mark as one of the league’s brightest young talents.
At just 18 years and 193 days, Lucy shattered the previous record held by West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, who took 5-19 at 18 years and 296 days in the 2017 WBBL.
Melbourne Stars had a solid start batting first until Lucy turned the game around in the fifth over. She bowled out Yastika Bhatia (8) and dismissed Captain Annabel Sutherland (21) in quick succession. Returning in the ninth over, she had Meg Lanning (13) caught behind. She struck again in the 11th over, removing Tess Flintoff (7), and sealed her five-wicket haul in the 15th over by trapping Deepti Sharma lbw with a clever slower delivery.
Lucy’s figures of 5-8 are now the joint-second-best in WBBL history, equaling Amanda-Jade Wellington’s record from 2021 and second only to Megan Schutt’s 6-19.
Her remarkable performance set the stage for Brisbane Heat to chase down a target of 139 in just 17.4 overs, winning by six wickets. India’s Jemimah Rodrigues played a key role in the chase, scoring 45 off 31 balls with five boundaries and two sixes.
