Former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has shared his thoughts on Virat Kohli on Sunday, ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. With the first Test starting in Perth on Nov 22, Johnson wonders if the pressure on Kohli might drive him to deliver a stellar performance or weigh him down.
Kohli’s recent form has been underwhelming. This year, he averages just 22.72 in Tests, far below his career average of 47.83 and his impressive 54.08 in Australia. Adding to the pressure, India’s surprising 3-0 home series loss to New Zealand has drawn criticism.
“His form hasn’t been great recently, and he’ll be under pressure here in front of so many Indian fans. Maybe this will fuel his determination. As a fan, I’d like to see him make one more Test ton in Australia. As his former adversary, maybe not. But Kohli thrives in fiery, high-stakes series like this one,” Johnson said.
Former opener David Warner echoed Johnson’s views in his Herald Sun column, saying, “People are writing Kohli off after India’s loss to New Zealand, but I’m worried for Australia. Kohli loves the challenge of playing in Australia, and this could be his moment to silence critics and pile on runs.”
“He brought aggression and toughness, inspiring a generation to play bold cricket. If you didn’t get him out early, he’d punish you. His cover drives, pull shots, and running between wickets stand out vividly,” Johnson added.
