Central Crime Branch (CEN) police apprehended a man on Thursday evening for allegedly deceiving women through a matrimonial website and defrauding prospective brides. According to police officials, M Madhu (31), from Machahalli in Mandya taluk, established contact with an unmarried woman from Davanagere via a matrimonial platform. He assured her of getting a job at the Railway Workshop in Mysuru. Believing him, the woman transferred Rs 21 lakh in phases. Following this, when Madhu became unreachable, the woman filed a case on May 4. Investigating her complaint, we arrested him, they added. The officials said that when they started investigating, it came to light that he had cheated a woman in Chikkamagaluru of Rs 3.8 lakh, collected Rs 26 lakh from women in Mandya CEN police limits, Rs 1.5 lakh from a woman in Davanagere extension police limits, Rs 1.3 lakh from Harihar town police limits, Rs 2.8 lakh from Bengaluru Cottonpet police station limits, Rs 90,000 from a woman in Mysuru CEN police limits, and Rs 5.5 lakh from a woman in KR Nagar police limits. SP Uma Prashant cautioned that fraudsters often target women through matrimonial websites.
