New Delhi

On the Maldives’ 56th Republic Day, Indian President Droupadi Murmu sent warm greetings to President Mohamed Muizzu, his government, and the people of the Maldives. The Indian High Commission shared the message on social media, celebrating the special occasion.

Earlier this year, in October, President Muizzu visited India, further strengthening the bond between the two nations. A key outcome of this visit was the decision to introduce India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) in the Maldives. This move is set to enhance financial inclusion, simplify transactions, and boost the country’s digital infrastructure. The approval of UPI by the Maldivian cabinet highlights President Muizzu’s focus on economic development and modernization.

A consortium led by TradeNet Maldives Corporation Limited will manage UPI’s implementation, with the support of banks, telecom firms, and other stakeholders. Additionally, President Muizzu launched RuPay cards during his visit to make transactions easier for both Indian tourists and Maldivians traveling to India.

This growing partnership between India and the Maldives showcases their shared commitment to cultural, economic, and strategic cooperation, with a focus on regional stability and digital progress.
