The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has decided to conduct necessary studies for the Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP). Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while presenting the budget this year, announced that a feasibility report will be prepared to introduce water metro services in the Gurupur and Netravathi rivers of Mangaluru.
A senior officer from KMB said that the project will be similar to the water metro project in Kochi. Necessary studies will have to be conducted before taking up the project. This project will take shape on a 30km stretch connecting several points from Bajal to Maravoor Bridge. It is expected to cover Kulur bridge, Bangrakulur, New Mangaluru Port, Sultan Battery, Tannirbhavi, Old Port, Bengre, Hoige Bazaar, Ullal, Bolar sea face, and Someshwar temple. “The aim is to connect 17 points, and the purpose of this project is to enhance tourism and recreation activity and to decongest the city, the officer said.
The project aims to establish an eco-friendly, economical, and efficient water transport system. The proposed fleet will consist of modern electric or diesel-powered catamaran boats equipped with essential amenities to ensure smooth and effective operation. The feasibility study will guide the placement of Water Metro stations, selecting locations based on demand, land availability, connectivity, and a strong emphasis on sustainability. The consultants will forecast service requirements for various user categories and project demand for the next 25 years, exploring multiple scenarios. A detailed LiDAR survey is expected to further support the project’s groundwork.
The report is also expected to recommend creating a Special Purpose Vehicle to manage the project, adding credibility and attracting investors and lenders.
