Brisbane
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the new Consulate General of India in Brisbane on Monday, aiming to boost India’s ties with the state of Queensland. The new consulate, India’s fourth in Australia after Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, is expected to support trade, educational exchanges, and the Indian community in the region.
Jaishankar expressed his delight at the inauguration, thanking Governor of Queensland Dr. Jeannette Young and local ministers Ros Bates and Fiona Simpson for attending the ceremony. He emphasized the consulate’s role in fostering India-Queensland relations and enhancing support for the diaspora.
While in Brisbane, Jaishankar also visited Roma Street Parklands, where he paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. “His message of peace and harmony resonates through the world,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
During his visit, Jaishankar met with Governor Young to discuss opportunities to deepen economic, trade, and investment links between India and Queensland.
The Brisbane consulate opening marks the start of Jaishankar’s two-nation tour, which includes Australia and Singapore. In Australia, he will co-chair the 15th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue (FMFD) with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra. He will also deliver the keynote speech at the “Raisina Down Under” forum in Parliament House.
Following his Australia visit, Jaishankar is set to travel to Singapore, where he will participate in the ASEAN-India Network of Think Tanks and engage with Singaporean leaders to review bilateral relations.
