Moldova’s President Maia Sandu appears set to win a second term, leading in the presidential runoff election with 54.19% of the votes. Preliminary results reported on Monday indicate a strong showing for Sandu, with nearly all ballots counted.
Her main opponent, former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, who is backed by the Socialist Party, trails with 45.81% of the votes. The Central Electoral Commission has processed 97.8% of ballots so far, and the final outcome is expected soon.
After casting her vote, Sandu expressed confidence in Moldova’s future, stating, “I voted with Moldova. I believe our citizens will choose well for our country. Today, more than ever, we must stand together for peace, independence, and our vote.”
Sandu, the former leader of the pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity, had already secured the most votes in the first round held on October 20, but did not reach the absolute majority needed to win outright. This led to a runoff against Stoianoglo, who campaigned on a platform of stability, prosperity, and European integration.
The results of this election could influence Moldova’s path toward closer ties with Europe, a key issue in Sandu’s campaign.
