Seoul
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced on Sunday that he aims to enhance security and defense cooperation with South Korea during his visit to Seoul. He arrived in the city to co-chair the first Strategic Dialogue with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul.
Borrell noted on social media that the EU and South Korea have developed a closer partnership over recent years, making significant strides in areas such as Digital, Green, and Health Partnerships. He emphasized that the focus of this visit is to elevate security and defense collaboration ‘to the next level.’
Key topics for discussion are expected to include the increasing tensions surrounding North Korea, particularly its recent deployment of troops to Russia to support its military actions in Ukraine. Borrell condemned this move last week, framing his visit as a crucial opportunity to address these alarming developments.
In addition to talks with Foreign Minister Cho, Borrell is scheduled to meet with Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and will visit the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. These discussions aim to reinforce the EU’s commitment to regional security and address mutual concerns regarding North Korea’s activities.
