Brisbane
During his address to the Indian community in Brisbane on Sunday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the enhanced relationship between India and Australia. He highlighted four key factors contributing to this deepening bond: PM Modi, Australia, the world, and the Indian diaspora.
Jaishankar’s visit marks the inauguration of India’s fourth consulate in Brisbane, fulfilling PM Modi’s promise to the Indian community. He expressed gratitude for the support of the approximately 125,000 Indians in Queensland, noting the state’s crucial economic role—accounting for 75% of Australia’s exports to India.
The EAM emphasized that the relationship should not just be seen as an achievement but as a framework for future cooperation, particularly referencing the QUAD alliance, which Australia is a founding partner of. He described the designation of Australia as a ‘comprehensive strategic partner’ as significant, indicating that such terminology is reserved for a select few nations.
Jaishankar praised the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) for positively impacting trade and highlighted the importance of agreements facilitating mobility and migration, such as the MATES agreement. He conveyed India’s growth ambitions, stating that while challenges exist, there is a global sentiment favoring India’s success.
His tour includes co-chairing the 15th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and delivering a keynote address at the 2nd Raisina Down Under conference. Following his visit to Australia, Jaishankar will travel to Singapore to strengthen partnerships further.
