India A cleared of dissent charges

Mackay

India A was cleared of ball tampering accusations after a heated moment during their unofficial Test against Australia A in Mackay on Sunday. The match stirred controversy on Day 4 when umpire Shawn Craig replaced the ball, claiming it was tampered with. Wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan expressed frustration over the call, calling it “a very stupid decision.” Craig warned Kishan for dissent, but no charges were ultimately filed.

Following the game, Cricket Australia confirmed the ball had been changed due to regular wear, not tampering. This clarification meant no penalties for India A or Kishan, as tampering could have led to a five-run penalty and, potentially, a suspension for India A’s captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The match itself saw highs and lows for India A. Batting first, they were bowled out for just 107, with Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, and Navdeep Saini scoring in double figures. Australia A gained an 88-run lead, scoring 195 in their first innings. In the second innings, a stellar 103 by Sai Sudharsan and an 88 by Padikkal powered India A to 312, setting Australia A a target of 224.

Despite early breakthroughs by Indian bowlers, Australia A chased down the target with a steady partnership from McSweeney and Webster, winning the match by seven wickets.

The two teams will meet again for the second unofficial Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) starting on Thursday.
