An incident in Maguindanao del Sur province, southern Philippines, eleven suspected members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) were killed, and five others were wounded during a clash between rival factions. On Thursday The Philippine Army’s 6th Infantry Division reported that the fighting erupted around 1:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday in Pagalungan town, prompting around 30 families to flee their homes to escape the violence.
The cause of the conflict between the two MILF factions remains unclear. This clash is particularly significant as the MILF had previously signed a peace agreement with the Philippine government in 2014, ending decades of conflict in the region. This peace deal led to the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and since 2019, over 26,000 MILF combatants have been decommissioned.
