The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) is poised to play a significant role not only at the national level but also on a global scale, according to a statement from the government on Wednesday.
NIXI unveiled its new office at the World Trade Centre in New Delhi, alongside the launch of new initiatives aimed at enhancing internet security and accessibility. S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), emphasized NIXI’s evolving role, stating, “NIXI is ready to make a difference in this field as its role is being redefined right now.”
Devesh Tyagi, CEO of NIXI, reported that the organization has successfully booked 41 lakh domains, with a goal to reach 50 lakh, marking a significant milestone. He highlighted NIXI’s infrastructure, noting that there are 77 exchange points across the country, which have been effective in maintaining data sovereignty by keeping domestic data traffic within India. Plans are also underway to introduce new schemes to increase these exchange points.
Founded as a non-profit organization, NIXI facilitates the peering of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to enable domestic traffic routing within India. This approach improves service quality by reducing latency and lowering bandwidth costs for ISPs, as it mitigates the need for international bandwidth. NIXI has been managing India’s .IN Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) since the government delegated the operations of the INRegistry to it in 2004.
