Kolkata
On Monday, Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, submitted a bail petition to the Calcutta High Court. The petition was admitted by Justice Subhendu Samanta, and a hearing may take place later in the day. Ghosh is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for two serious cases. The first involves financial irregularities at the hospital, while the second is related to the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in August.
In the rape and murder case, Ghosh faces accusations of misleading investigators and tampering with evidence. Initially, the Kolkata Police handled the case until the CBI took over following a High Court order. The former station house officer of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, is also being investigated for similar charges, and both Ghosh and Mondal are currently in judicial custody.
Previously, Ghosh sought a quick hearing to allow him to access his fixed deposit funds to cover legal fees, but the High Court rejected that request. In a related development, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front submitted 137 pages of documents to highlight the state health department’s failure to address complaints about financial misconduct during Ghosh’s tenure. These documents allegedly reveal instances of misappropriated funds and ignored whistle-blower reports.
