New Delhi

Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov emphasized the importance of India solidifying its relationship with Russia during a discussion on key aspects of bilateral cooperation. He highlighted ongoing efforts to establish a direct trade payment system between the two nations using rubles and rupees.

Alipov acknowledged the challenges in facilitating these transactions, noting that Indian banks exhibit caution in dealing with Russia due to pressures from the United States. “The biggest challenge is the over-cautiousness of Indian banks regarding transactions with Russia,” he stated, attributing this hesitation to potential sanctions from the U.S.

He urged India to expand its relationships beyond U.S.-aligned countries, questioning why India should limit itself. “Today it is necessary for India to settle its relationship with Russia; tomorrow the U.S. might ask India to curb its relationship with Bangladesh, for example,” he warned.

The ambassador stressed the need for countries like India, Russia, and China to have an equal say in global financial matters, advocating for India’s voice in international cooperation. He expressed optimism about India’s banking sector gaining confidence in handling transactions with Russia without fearing U.S. coercion.

Alipov also highlighted India’s growing interest in collaborative projects in Russia’s Far East and Arctic regions, as well as the significance of nuclear and defense cooperation. He noted that Russia continues to play a pivotal role in India’s nuclear energy sector and commended joint projects like the BrahMos missile.

Looking ahead, Alipov mentioned anticipated high-level visits between Russia and India, including an inter-government dialogue scheduled for November, reinforcing the resilience of bilateral ties amidst external challenges.
