The Federation of Udupi-Kasaragod 400kV Power Transmission Line Action Committees has submitted a memorandum to the Nodal Officer of Udupi-Kasaragod Transmission Company Ltd (UKTL), urging the implementation of revised government guidelines during the development of the controversial transmission line. The federation strongly opposes the project, arguing that it threatens agricultural lands and properties. Members expressed concerns over harassment from Sterlite Power Grid Ventures Ltd, which they claim is not adhering to established rules.
Alphonse D’Souza, President of the Mathrbhoomi Samrakshana Samithi and a resident of Niddodi, called on the government to explore alternative routes to prevent the destruction of farmland. He emphasized that the livelihoods of farmers in several villages—including Inna, Edapadavu, Vitla, Elinje, Aikala, and Ulepady—are at risk due to the planned power line.
Elinje Sukheshchandra Shetty, the federation’s Convener, highlighted potential health risks associated with the transmission line and noted that many farmers operate on small plots of land. The construction would restrict their ability to cultivate, build homes, or rear livestock. He suggested considering advanced technologies, such as underground cables or positioning the line along national highways or coastal areas, as viable alternatives that would spare agricultural land and support local livelihoods. The federation remains firm in its stance to protect farming areas, warning that failure to address their concerns will lead to intensified opposition.
