Union Power Minister Manohar Lal has called on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce reliance on diesel-powered generation. His comments came during a meeting focused on the power sector in the islands on Friday.
Lal stressed the importance of boosting renewable energy, particularly wind energy, and developing energy storage solutions. He noted that this shift would help lower energy costs for residents. The minister also suggested exploring alternative energy sources, such as ethanol-based fuels.
In addition, Lal urged the administration to address timely payments of dues from government departments to decrease transmission losses and narrow the gap between the average cost of electricity supply and the revenue collected.
The meeting, held in Sri Vijaya Puram, was attended by Lieutenant Governor D.K. Joshi, along with senior officials from the power ministry and public sector enterprises in the power sector. Lal emphasized the need for swift implementation of projects approved under the revamped distribution sector scheme and adherence to the necessary reforms outlined in the plan.
