Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new manager of the England national football team on Wednesday, effective January 1, 2025. The 51-year-old German coach takes over from Gareth Southgate, becoming the third foreign manager in England’s history, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel, who has been without a club since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, has an impressive coaching resume, having managed Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint-Germain. He has a strong track record, including winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, as well as league titles in France and Germany.

The decision to appoint Tuchel has sparked some criticism regarding the FA’s choice to overlook English candidates for the role. However, Tuchel expressed pride in his new position, stating, ‘I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team.’ He also mentioned his excitement about working with England’s talented players.

Tuchel will be supported by English coach Anthony Barry, who previously worked with him at Bayern. The FA’s CEO, Mark Bullingham, praised Tuchel’s vast experience and dedication during the hiring process. Tuchel inherits a talented squad featuring stars like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, aiming to end England’s 58-year wait for a major tournament win, with the next big challenge being the 2026 World Cup.
