Muzaffarpur
Residents in Muzaffarpur are facing severe flooding and have had to leave their waterlogged homes to seek safety. The flooding is primarily due to heavy water release from the Kosi Barrage in Birpur, triggered by continuous rainfall in Nepal’s catchment areas. Many rivers in bordering districts are now flowing at or above dangerous levels.
In response to the crisis, the Congress State Office distributed relief supplies to affected areas. Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh called on the government to act more decisively. He criticized the current administration, stating, We urge the government to be proactive in helping flood victims. This is a double-engine government, yet where is the action? He emphasized that it is the Chief Minister’s duty to manage disasters effectively and questioned the leadership during such times.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited the flood-affected regions to oversee relief efforts. A significant volume of water from the Kosi and Gandak barrages has impacted northern Bihar and Nepal, leading to floods in Sitamarhi after a dam breach on September 29. Rivers like the Bagmati and Kamla Balan are overflowing, submerging several villages.
To assist residents, makeshift tents have been erected along the roadsides, and community kitchens have been established in the hardest-hit areas. While floodwaters have receded in some regions like Supaul and West Champaran, challenges remain. District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen assured ongoing monitoring of water levels and dam breaches.
