The State School Education and Literacy Department, led by District In-charge Minister Madhu S. Bangarappa, announced that eggs will now be included with the nutritious hot midday meal every day of the week. During the inauguration of a district-level program at Gandhi Maidan in Sagar, organized in partnership with the Azim Premji Foundation, the Minister highlighted that the distribution of eggs has increased from once a week to two days, thanks to significant funding from the foundation, totaling ₹1,591 crore.
The initiative will be implemented starting this academic year. Recently, the Chief Minister launched this program at the Yadgiri district headquarters. Along with eggs, children are already receiving nutritious food items like milk and ragi malt. This program aims to benefit 57 lakh children across 76,000 schools in the state, covering both government and aided schools for students in classes 1 to 10.
Minister Bangarappa noted that some districts in Karnataka are educationally backward, and the nutritional and educational progress of children there has not met expectations. To address this, ₹5,000 crore has been allocated under the Kalyan Karnataka Welfare Scheme for various projects, with ₹1,250 crore designated for the Akshara Aviskhara scheme.
He also mentioned that many school buildings in various taluks, including Malnad, have suffered damage from last year’s rains. Plans for urgent repairs and the construction of new buildings will be completed within the next year, with financial support from donors sought for this effort.
