 Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali Keremane has received recognition from the UNESCO convention,   Keremane Shivananda Hegde, Director, Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali Keremane informed media persons.
The Idagunji Mandali has been honoured with global recognition from UNESCO, becoming the first Yakshagana institution to achieve this distinction.
Established in 1934, the Mandali is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2024, marking nearly a century of dedication to preserving and promoting the traditional art of Yakshagana. In June 2024, the Mandali gained international recognition when it was selected as one of 58 global NGOs to advise UNESCO on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, during the 10th session held at UNESCO Headquarters.
For nine decades, the Mandali has been a key figure in Yakshagana through performances, education at its Gurukula, national festivals like the Keremane Shambhu Hegde Rashtriya Natyotsava, and initiatives such as Aatave Paata, which introduces Yakshagana to schools.
Many of its leaders, including the late Keremane Shivarama Hegde and Dr. Keremane Mahabala Hegde, have been recognized with prestigious awards for their contributions. The Mandali remains committed to preserving traditional Yakshagana, protecting young artists from commercial influences, and educating the public through performances and workshops.
The troupe’s focus on education, protection, and promotion ensures Yakshagana remains relevant and vibrant for future generations.
