On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s 155th birth anniversary, PETA India has urged Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde to rename South Mumbai’s infamous ‘Mutton Street’ to ‘Ahimsa Marg’ in tribute to Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. In a letter to CM Shinde, PETA emphasized that Gandhi’s birthday is celebrated globally as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence.’

PETA Manager Kiran Ahuja highlighted that the name ‘Mutton Street’ reflects a colonial past linked to the meat trade, which contradicts Gandhi’s principles of non-violence. Ahuja stated, renaming it would honor Gandhi’s memory and encourage people to respect animals by choosing healthier plant-based foods.

Referring to the negative reputation of ‘Mutton Street,’ also known as ‘Chor Bazaar’ or Thieves Market, PETA suggested that a new name symbolizing peace could deter crime and attract vegan businesses, boosting tourism.

PETA’s letter included a quote from Gandhi, emphasizing the value of all living beings and the need to protect the helpless from cruelty. The letter pointed out the violence associated with meat production and its links to various diseases, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Mutton Street’ has a rich history dating back two centuries, originally linked to Mumbai’s diverse communities. It has long been a popular food market, especially during Ramadan.
