Shakib Al Hasan, one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, has announced that he plans to play his final Test match for Bangladesh against South Africa in Mirpur. The match, set for October, is currently uncertain as Cricket South Africa is still reviewing security arrangements after inspecting the venue.

This decision comes amid political turmoil in Bangladesh, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the protests that ensued. During this period, Shakib was participating in the Global T20 League in Canada. After the league, he traveled to Pakistan for a Test series, which Bangladesh won historically, before heading to India for their ongoing tour.

In a recent press conference, Shakib expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket on home soil, informing the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about his plans. He stated, I am available for the South Africa series, but with everything happening at home, it’s uncertain. He emphasized his commitment to safety and security, mentioning concerns from his family and friends about returning to Bangladesh.

The BCB has assured that Shakib will not face any unfair treatment upon his return. Shakib is among those implicated in a recent murder case, but officials, including Bangladesh’s law adviser, believe he will not be arrested. Shakib’s future remains a topic of considerable concern amid these developments.
