The district has reported 11 cases of cholera in just one week, leading authorities to call for heightened public awareness and strict hygiene practices. Deputy Commissioner K Vidya Kumari noted that five cases were identified at the Idu Primary Health Center in Karkala, with additional cases of vomiting and diarrhea confirmed in Malpe, Shirva, Kaup, and Kemmannu.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of immediate precautions to protect against the disease. Fortunately, all affected individuals, including two women and a child, are recovering. Among the cases, five individuals had visited a bar, while two were engaged in fishing activities.
During a district-level meeting, the DC stressed the necessity of maintaining public cleanliness to curb further infections. She urged residents to wash seafood, fruits, and vegetables thoroughly before consumption and to practice good hand hygiene – washing hands with soap before eating or preparing food and after using the toilet. It was recommended that hotels and restaurants provide hot water for drinking and wash utensils in hot water. Additionally, the public is advised to avoid consuming food and fruits sold on roadsides, as they may be contaminated.
