Bengaluru’s local government has faced increasing scrutiny due to the absence of a mayor-led council for several years, resulting in ongoing allegations of corruption within various municipal departments. NR Ramesh, former leader of the ruling party in the BBMP, has publicly condemned the situation in an open letter addressed to Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath and Administrator Umashankar.
In his letter, Ramesh highlights widespread corruption and irregularities across several departments, including Urban Planning, Roads Infrastructure, Major Waterways, Solid Waste Management, and Welfare. He criticized senior IAS officers for allegedly yielding to corrupt practices, stating that allowing such rampant corruption undermines the interests of the Corporation and the citizens of Bengaluru.
Ramesh urged that complaints be filed with investigative agencies against the heads of the municipal corporation, questioning the integrity of those in leadership positions. He also pointed out the negative impact of brokers and influencers in key departments, providing detailed examples of corruption involving Chief Engineers.
Specifically, he noted that the Urban Planning Department should properly approve area maps at the zonal level, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in municipal operations.
