Taipei
The US State Department has approved a potential military sale to Taiwan worth about USD 228 million amid rising tensions with China. The sale, reported by Focus Taiwan, includes the return, repair, and reshipment of spare parts and equipment for aircraft. It also covers engineering, technical, and logistics support services.
The US Department of Defense’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency has detailed that the sale includes both classified and unclassified components. The US Congress has been notified and is expected to approve the sale. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for the ongoing US support under the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense emphasized the strategic importance of the sale, noting that China’s grey zone tactics have affected Taiwan’s training and readiness. The ministry stated that the new equipment would improve the combat readiness and safety of Taiwan’s Air Force.
This sale marks the 16th military deal approved by the Biden administration, reflecting continued US support. US-Taiwan relations have strengthened over the past five years, particularly in military and economic areas. The US has supported Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations and advocated for its interests despite China’s objections.
China has condemned the US actions and increased military activities around Taiwan in response to what it sees as provocations.
