After NorthEast United FC’s hard-fought win over debutants Mohammedan SC in their ISL 2024-25 opener at Kishore Bharati Krirangan, head coach Juan Pedro Benali acknowledged Mohammedan’s potential to surprise teams this season. Despite the loss, the Black and White Brigade showcased a strong start, pressing the Durand Cup champions and creating several threats throughout the match.

Backed by a spirited home crowd, Mohammedan SC held 60% possession and matched NorthEast United in shots on target. The game remained tight until stoppage time when NEUFC substitutes Huidrom Thoi Singh and Alaeddine Ajaraie combined to score the winning goal in the 94th minute. Singh’s assist marked his first in the ISL, while Ajaraie calmly finished to secure all three points.

Benali admitted that his team struggled in the first half, lacking patience and consistency with the ball. However, he praised their defensive organization and credited tactical adjustments for their improved second-half performance.

Reflecting on Mohammedan SC’s strong debut, Benali wasn’t surprised, warning that they would be a tough team to face this season. They’ll make a lot of surprises. They fought hard, played well, and we had to stay patient. The goal eventually came, just as we planned, he said.
