Shiv Sena MLA defends burqa distribution as honoring Muslim women

Mumbai

A day after strong objections from the BJP, Shiv Sena MLA Yamini Jadhav from Byculla, Mumbai, defended her decision to distribute burqas to Muslim women. She argued that as a public representative, she must address the needs of her constituents regardless of their religion.

Jadhav pointed out that while gifts are commonly given during Diwali, Muslim women had not received similar gestures. She explained that the burqa distribution was carefully planned, including verifying identities with Aadhaar cards, to honor Muslim women’s dignity.

Despite facing criticism for alleged appeasement, Jadhav emphasized her long-standing work for the Muslim community. She noted past efforts, like delivering Iftar meals during Ramadan and providing essential items to less fortunate families.

Jadhav defended her actions by highlighting the inclusive nature of Shiv Sena under its founder, Balasaheb Thackeray, who had Muslim activists and leaders in the party. She stressed that Hindutva, as she sees it, is inclusive of all people living in India, regardless of their religion. She also mentioned her attendance at festivals of various communities in her constituency, asserting that this does not compromise her Hindutva beliefs. Jadhav questioned why her efforts are being scrutinized now, noting similar plans were not criticized earlier.
