Amna Baloch became Pakistan’s second woman Foreign Secretary on Wednesday. She succeeded Syrus Sajjad Qazi, who retired after a 34-year diplomatic career. Baloch, a Grade-22 Foreign Service officer, was appointed last week. She is the 33rd Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, following Tehmina Janjua, the first woman to hold the post from 2017 to 2019.
Baloch, 58, joined the foreign service in 1991. She has held several key positions, including Consul General in Chengdu, China, and High Commissioner to Malaysia. Before becoming Foreign Secretary, she served as Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Baloch is married with two daughters.
