The Maharashtra government has appointed a committee led by the Chief Secretary to implement the NITI Aayog’s report aimed at transforming the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) into a $300 billion economy by 2030, up from the current $140 billion. The 22-member committee, consisting of bureaucrats from 11 departments, collectors, and municipal commissioners, will focus on attracting foreign direct investment, promoting startups, and creating employment in the MMR.

The committee’s primary responsibility is to ensure the rapid execution of NITI Aayog’s recommendations, which include boosting infrastructure, affordable housing, slum rehabilitation, and promoting MMR as a global services hub. The government has not included any ministers or elected representatives in the committee to expedite coordination among departments and speed up the process.

CM Eknath Shinde has supported the report, stating it will help the government further the development of MMR. Plans include affordable housing, developing a data center in Navi Mumbai, and completing the Alibaug Multimodal Corridor. The state government has already approved projects worth Rs 80,000 crore and is working to enhance tourism along the coastline.

The NITI Aayog has also projected that private investment worth $125-135 billion and additional GDP growth of $130-150 billion could be attracted, helping MMR reach its $300 billion target by 2030.
