Nepal’s ruling alliance is preparing a no-confidence motion to remove Deputy House Speaker Indira Rana Magar from office, citing her incompetence. The ruling coalition plans to present an impeachment resolution in the House of Representatives under Article 91 of the Constitution. It has been alleged that Rana has not performed her duties as expected in her role.
A senior leader confirmed that a meeting of the ruling coalition was held to discuss the no-confidence motion against Rana. According to Article 91, sub-section (6)(c) of the Constitution, the Speaker or Deputy Speaker can be removed by a two-thirds majority of the total members of the House.
Rana was appointed Deputy Speaker from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) quota, and her potential removal has created political tensions. One-fourth of the House of Representatives can file an impeachment motion. The CPN-UML, led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has instructed its MPs to remain in Kathmandu until September 19 to prepare for the motion.
A recent controversy also surrounded Rana’s letter to the United States Embassy in Kathmandu. She had requested visa interview dates for herself and five others to attend an event in New York. The letter emphasized the importance of the event, which was held under the invitation of the United Nations.
