American tennis player Taylor Fritz advanced to the US Open quarterfinals in men’s singles with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud in the Round of 16. The match lasted two hours and 44 minutes, with Fritz hitting 56 winners compared to Ruud’s 32.
After the match, Fritz acknowledged Ruud’s strong play, especially in the first set. He outplayed me in the first set. I had some chances, he had some, and he took them. I had to stay in it and fight through some tough service games early in the second set. Once I applied some scoreboard pressure, I felt his level dropped a bit, and I was able to take control, Fritz told sources. He emphasized staying focused and avoiding added pressure by taking it one match at a time, contrasting with his approach in 2022 when early expectations led to a first-round exit.
Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov also moved into the quarterfinals after a hard-fought five-set win against Russia’s Andrey Rublev, ending 6-3, 7-6(3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3. The three-hour, 39-minute battle saw Dimitrov struggle with his rhythm as the match progressed. I was playing well for the first two sets, but then my body started to lose its rhythm, and Rublev wasn’t going to give up easily. Staying patient and relying on my experience, along with support from the crowd, made the difference, Dimitrov reflected after the match.
