At the World U20 Athletics Championships, Aarti secured a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000m race walk, setting a new national U20 record with a time of 44:39.99. This achievement marked India’s first medal at the event. Aarti improved her previous record of 47:21.04, set in March at the National Federation Cup U20 Championships.
China’s Zhuoma Baima won gold with a time of 43:26.60, and Meiling Chen took silver with 44:30.67. In addition to Aarti’s record, Pooja Singh set a new U20 national record in the high jump with a leap of 1.83m, finishing second in her qualification group and ninth overall. Steeplechaser Sharuk Khan also set a new U20 national record in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:45.12.
The World Athletics U20 Championships 2024 in Lima runs from August 28 to 31. India has sent 43 athletes, including 23 men and 20 women. The team features a diverse roster competing across various track and field events, including sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers.
