Thousands of Physical Education teachers in Karnataka have warned the state government of an indefinite strike and a boycott of Teachers’ Day celebrations if their demands are not addressed promptly. The Physical Education Teachers Association of Karnataka stated that despite being designated as Assistant Teachers 17 years ago, their demands, including promotions, have not been fulfilled.
A protest was staged by Physical Education teachers from various parts of Karnataka to support these demands. Association leaders expressed concerns about unequal treatment compared to general teachers, citing issues such as unequal pay and disparities in educational qualifications. They also demanded paid leave to pursue further studies.
The Association’s Honorary President, Arun Shahpur, highlighted the neglect faced by Physical Education teachers over the years, emphasizing the lack of facilities and what was described as step-motherly treatment. S. Chowdappa, the State President of the Association, also pointed out discrimination in the recruitment process, where Physical Education instructors were not treated on par with general teachers.
The Association has made it clear that if their demands are not met, they will proceed with the indefinite strike and will boycott Teachers’ Day celebrations. Around 5,000 Physical Instructors participated in the protest, showing strong support for the Association’s demands.
