West Indies seamer Shannon Gabriel announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday at the age of 36. Gabriel concludes his career with 86 international appearances, gaining prominence particularly in Test cricket.
Gabriel made his Test debut in 2012 against England at Lord’s. His standout performance occurred in 2018 during a Test against Sri Lanka in Gros Islet, where he achieved career-best figures of 8/62. This 13-wicket haul remains one of the finest by a West Indies bowler, ranking alongside the greats like Michael Holding, Courtney Walsh, and Gudakesh Motie.
His final Test match took place at his home ground in Trinidad last July, where he took his last wicket against India’s Rohit Sharma. The match was drawn due to rain on the final day.
In his retirement announcement on Instagram, Gabriel expressed gratitude for his cricketing career, thanking God, Cricket West Indies, coaches, and teammates for their support. He plans to continue representing Trinidad and Tobago and participating in global franchise cricket. Reflecting on his 12-year career, Gabriel expressed joy and a continued passion for the sport, looking forward to future opportunities.
