A vegetable trader from HAL, Salma, played a crucial role in securing a life sentence for Mohammad Amjad (38) after she provided key eyewitness testimony in a murder case. The crime occurred near Salma’s shop, and her account was pivotal as other witnesses withdrew their support.
The murder involved the victim Syed Abdullah, who was killed by Amjad in retaliation for the alleged rape of Amjad’s sister by Abdullah and others in November 2013. On August 2, 2015, Amjad fatally stabbed Abdullah near the HAL vegetable market.
Despite threats and the absence of other witness support, Salma’s testimony was accepted by the court as credible. Judge Somashekhar of the Civil and Sessions Court sentenced Amjad to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 based on Salma’s evidence. The court noted that while there were minor discrepancies in the prosecution’s case, these did not undermine the overall validity of Salma’s testimony.
Salma’s consistent account was corroborated by the complainant’s evidence and post-mortem reports, leading to the court’s decision despite attempts by the defense to discredit her testimony.
