Australia captain Alyssa Healy has confirmed that Jess Jonassen still has a chance to rejoin the team, despite not being included in the 15-player squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup. Jonassen, a seasoned spinner with 105 T20I matches, was overlooked for this tournament, a decision influenced by the strong presence of players like Georgia Wareham, Sophie Molineux, Alana King, and Ashleigh Gardner.
Earlier this year, Jonassen missed out on the squad for Australia’s series against Bangladesh, and her recent performance struggles against the West Indies and Molineux’s return from injury have also affected her selection. The last time she missed a World Cup squad was in 2013 due to injury.
Despite her omission, Healy remains optimistic about Jonassen’s future. The door is still wide open for her, Healy said, noting that Jonassen has had a fluctuating career but has consistently shown her potential. Healy praised Jonassen’s recent strong performances, including 11 wickets for Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League and impressive stats in The Hundred.
Healy expressed disappointment over Jonassen’s exclusion but affirmed her belief in Jonassen’s future contributions to the Australian team. The squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup includes Alyssa Healy (captain and wicketkeeper), Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham, and Tayla Vlaeminck.
