To address Bengaluru’s traffic congestion, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced plans to develop nearly 100 kilometres of signal-free corridors across 17 locations. The ambitious project, projected to cost Rs 12,000 crore, aims to alleviate traffic woes and improve travel efficiency in the city.
A senior BBMP official stated that the decision to construct these corridors follows extensive traffic analysis and growth projections. “We have carefully studied the traffic situation to determine where interventions are most needed. Our analysis forecasted lane requirements until 2044, leading to the proposal of these signal-free corridors at crucial junctions,” the official explained.
The corridors will be modeled on the successful Rajajinagar-K.R. Circle signal-free corridor.
Key planned stretches include:
- A 23-kilometre stretch from K.R. Puram to Yeshwantpur-Goraguntepalya.
- A 5.5-kilometre corridor on Hosur Road from Anepalya to Silk Board.
- A 10-kilometre elevated corridor from Marenahalli to Kanakapura Road-Thalaghattapura NICE Road.
- A 2.7-kilometre elevated road from Minerva to Cubbon Park.
The BBMP’s traffic analysis highlighted that many of these corridors currently face heavy traffic, with speeds dropping to 15-20 kilometres per hour. This congestion results in fuel wastage and reduced productivity. Existing roads, which are four or six lanes wide, are insufficient for current and projected traffic needs. The planned interventions include constructing elevated corridors or underpasses, as there is limited scope for widening existing roads.
