Mangaluru

The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has approved a draft for a new building bylaw to replace the existing one at a recent council meeting chaired by Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur. The draft has been sent to the standing committee for town planning for further review.

In July 2017, the Urban Development Department published a model draft building bylaw applicable to all city corporations in the state. In response, the MCC council discussed implementing a new bylaw for Mangaluru city at a meeting in January 2018 and decided to refer the matter to the standing committee on town planning for a report.

At the recent council meeting, MCC chief whip Premanand Shetty noted that necessary additions and amendments were made to the draft bylaw. The council ratified the resolution regarding the new bylaw in August 2020, and the revised draft was submitted to the government for approval in September 2023.

Following a government order dated April 2, a committee of senior officials reviewed the draft. The committee’s report was submitted to the government, and on June 27, the Urban Development Department sent a letter to the MCC to verify the new bylaw against existing rules and acts.

Meanwhile, corporators from Congress, including opposition leader Praveen Chandra Alva, former Mayor Shashidhar Shetty, Naveen D’Souza, and Abdul Ravoof, requested notice for the standing committee meeting.
