On Thursday, four police officers were severely injured in Chopra, North Dinajpur district, West Bengal, during a raid targeting a local miscreant named Dil Mohammad. The police were attacked with sharp weapons by Mohammad’s associates, which included women, as they approached his residence. Mohammad, known as a private money-lender, was accused of kidnapping a local youth over a debt dispute.
The injured officers, including two junior officers, a constable, and the police vehicle driver, were later rescued by a second police team and are currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Siliguri. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
Chopra recently gained national attention after a video surfaced showing local Trinamool Congress leader Tajimul Islam, known as ‘JCB,’ beating a woman at a Kangaroo court.
Incidents of violence against law enforcement officials in West Bengal have been frequent. On July 15, a police team was attacked in Kultali, South 24 Parganas, while trying to arrest a suspect accused of selling fake gold. In January, Enforcement Directorate officials were attacked during a raid in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas. Similarly, in April, National Investigation Agency officials were assaulted in Bhapatinagar, East Midnapore, while investigating a fatal explosion from December 2022.
