Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Sri Lanka’s former Army chief known for his role in defeating the LTTE, has officially declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. Fonseka, who previously ran for president in 2010, promises to combat corruption and revitalize the economy.
Fonseka announced his bid on X, stating, I wish to announce my candidacy for the Presidency. For 76 years, ineffective leadership has led us to bankruptcy. To revive Sri Lanka, we must eradicate corruption and harness our natural resources to increase revenue. This is my formal announcement for the 2024 Presidential election.
He also mentioned that his team will release a policy statement soon and welcomed public input, emphasizing his commitment to inclusive governance.
The election, set to occur between September 17 and October 16, will be officially scheduled on Friday. Other candidates include Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, who called the election crucial for the nation’s future, opposition leaders Sajith Premadasa and Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is seeking re-election.
The Elections Commission will announce the exact date of the election soon and clarified it is not responsible for any statements made by candidates regarding polling day.
