Centre to build 5,833 new EV charging stations along national highways

India is making strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, with 5,293 charging stations now operational along national highways. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways announced a goal to establish 5,833 more, reaching a total of 7,432 stations.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, shared in the Rajya Sabha that an Rs 800 crore capital subsidy has been allocated to three oil marketing companies to help set up these stations. Currently, 4,729 of the existing stations were developed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, costing Rs 178 crore.

Minister Gadkari highlighted the Ministry of Heavy Industries’ target to establish 5,833 charging stations through oil marketing companies under the Petroleum Ministry. At this time, the government has not planned additional power stations along the highways for EV charging.

Maharashtra leads with 750 EV stations, followed by Uttar Pradesh (577), Rajasthan (482), Tamil Nadu (369), Karnataka (300), and Haryana (284).

The Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024 aims to enhance green mobility and EV manufacturing. The scheme, ending on July 31, offers Rs 500 crore to support 372,215 vehicles. Claims are processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. The two-wheeler sector is projected to grow by 7-9% in FY25, fueled by increased EV sales under EMPS 2024, according to CareEdge Ratings.
