The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has partnered with IIT Roorkee and IIT Mandi to advance 6G technology and improve connectivity in India. This collaboration, announced on Wednesday, is part of the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) initiative by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The focus is on developing ‘Cell-Free’ 6G access points, a departure from traditional mobile networks where a single base station serves each cell. The ‘Cell-Free’ approach uses multiple access points (APs) across a wide area to provide seamless service to numerous user devices, explained the Ministry of Communications. This method promises to eliminate dead zones, enhance signal strength, and offer faster data speeds, especially in crowded locations.

The project aims not only to establish new radio access networks for 6G but also to contribute to the global 6G standardisation efforts. It will drive the commercialisation of 6G technologies, generate intellectual property rights (IPRs), and develop a skilled workforce to support this emerging field.

C-DOT CEO Rajkumar Upadhyay highlighted the importance of indigenous technology in meeting specific communication needs. He emphasized that this initiative will foster IPR creation in the 6G sector and advance cutting-edge technologies.
