Congress party welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to put an interim stay on the ‘nameplate’ display order along the Kanwar Yatra route in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Monday. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera praised the Supreme Court for halting what he described as a ‘communal’ agenda by the BJP-led governments. In a video message, Khera expressed hope that the Prime Minister would remind his Chief Ministers of their ‘Raj Dharma’ and uphold constitutional values.
The Supreme Court intervened in response to petitions challenging the ‘eatery name display’ directives from the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments, deeming them unconstitutional and illegal. The Court stayed these orders until further notice and scheduled the next hearing for July 26. Notices were also issued to the Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh governments.
Khera criticized the state governments’ directives as biased and malicious, urging the Prime Minister to ensure his Chief Ministers avoid issuing such unconstitutional orders. JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi supported the Supreme Court’s decision, noting that such policies can create societal divisions, though he suggested a ban on non-vegetarian food shops along the Kanwar Yatra route. Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi remarked that the Supreme Court’s action reaffirms that the country will be governed by constitutional law rather than arbitrary state directives.
