Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav will attend the Trinamool Congress’ annual ‘Martyrs Day’ rally in Kolkata on Sunday, as confirmed by Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh. Yadav has accepted the invitation from West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to join the event.
The ‘Martyrs Day’ rally honors the 13 individuals who lost their lives during a 1993 demonstration led by Mamata Banerjee when she was with the West Bengal Youth Congress. This annual event is a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against the CPI-M-led regime.
In addition to Akhilesh Yadav, former Rajya Sabha member Kiranmay Nanda, who is also from the Samajwadi Party, will attend the rally. Both leaders are expected to arrive at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Sunday and head directly to the rally venue at Esplanade in central Kolkata.
Nanda previously served as the Fisheries Minister under the Left Front government when his party had an alliance with the CPI(M)-led Left Front in West Bengal.
On Saturday, Mamata Banerjee highlighted the significance of July 21 in her official X statement. She described the day as a somber chapter in Bengal’s history, noting that it marks the brutal loss of 13 lives under the CPI-M regime in 1993. July 21 remains a poignant milestone and an integral part of Bengal’s public culture, her message read.
