Due to continuous heavy rainfall in Khanapur taluk of the district, several villages near forest areas have become inaccessible, as roads and bridges have been submerged.
The district administration has raised its alert level after more than 30 houses collapsed, and schools have been closed for two days starting Friday. The Malaprabha, Mahadayi, and Pandari Rivers, along with several streams including Alatri, Kalasa, Banduri, Mangetri, Vajra, Panasuri, Kumbar, Tatti, Kotni, Bail, and Nittur, have flooded due to the incessant rainfall.
The bridge near Nilawade village and another between Chikkahattiholi and Chikkamunavalli on the Malaprabha River are reported to be underwater. Flooding of the Pandari River has led to the closure of the road connecting Satanali and Machali villages with Londa, affecting hundreds of people. Floodwaters from the Malaprabha River have completely submerged the Anjaneya temple in Habbanahatti and the Marulashankar temple in Itagi village.
According to meteorological department sources, Khanapur town received 41mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Other areas recorded varying amounts of rainfall, with Londa railway station reporting the highest at 101mm and Kanakumbi at 147mm.
More than 30 houses across the taluk have collapsed either fully or partially, and the taluk administration is assessing the damage to provide compensation. Residents have been advised by the administration to avoid staying in mud houses due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
