Sri Lanka plans to start issuing e-passports to citizens beginning in January 2025, as announced by the Department of Immigration and Emigration on Wednesday. The department revealed that a new application process will be implemented for obtaining passports.
Starting July 16, individuals will need to pre-register to apply for Sri Lankan passports. The new application system will be available from July 19 for those who registered on July 16, with priority given to registered applicants.
Previously, the department launched an online passport application platform to make it easier for people living outside Colombo, allowing them to apply for or renew passports without having to travel to the capital’s main office.
Since the economic crisis of 2022, there has been a significant increase in passport applications from Sri Lankans seeking job opportunities abroad. The introduction of e-passports and the new application method are expected to streamline the process and make it more efficient for citizens.
